Description:
The Gold Standard coin was first designed in 2016 to commemorate 200 years since Britain began linking the value of the pound to gold. The 2020 edition is an exclusive Royal Mint Bullion release that celebrates Britain’s long history with gold and its role in shaping the global monetary system.
The reverse was designed by Royal Mint graphic designer Dominique Evans. It features a detailed design inspired by the gold standard and Britain’s historic connection to precious metal coinage. The obverse carries Jody Clark’s official right-facing portrait of Queen Elizabeth II.
Britain’s move toward the gold standard took place during the same period that saw the return of the famous Gold Sovereign. Often called the “chief coin of the world,” the Sovereign became widely recognized for its reliability and gold content. It remains one of The Royal Mint’s most popular coins among collectors and bullion buyers.
The Royal Mint has worked with gold for hundreds of years. An important moment in this history came when Sir Isaac Newton submitted a report that helped establish a fixed value for the gold guinea. This decision played a key role in Britain’s gradual shift toward a gold-based monetary system.
The gold standard officially became British law in 1821. Other countries, including Canada, the United States, and Germany, later adopted similar systems. Britain eventually left the gold standard in 1931, but its influence on international trade and currency remains an important part of financial history.
This quarter-ounce Gold Standard coin combines precious metal value with a design inspired by one of the most significant periods in British monetary history.
