The 1964 Kennedy Half Dollar is one of the most recognizable silver coins issued by the United States Mint. Each coin was struck in 90% silver and contains approximately 0.3575 troy ounces of pure silver. A $1 face value lot includes two half dollars with a combined silver weight of about 0.715 troy ounces.
The coins in this listing are graded About Uncirculated. Coins in this condition retain most of their original design detail and may show only light signs of handling or brief circulation.
The Kennedy Half Dollar was introduced in 1964 to honor President John F. Kennedy following his assassination in November 1963. Chief Engraver Gilroy Roberts created the portrait on the obverse, while Frank Gasparro designed the presidential seal shown on the reverse.
The coin entered circulation in March 1964 and quickly became popular with the public. Many people saved the coins as memorial pieces, which made them harder to find in everyday circulation soon after their release.
The 1964 issue is especially important because it was the only Kennedy Half Dollar produced with a 90% silver composition. The silver content was lowered to 40% beginning in 1965. In 1971, circulating Kennedy Half Dollars changed to a copper-nickel clad composition.
