Description:
The Royal Mint has been producing British coinage for more than 1,000 years, making it one of the oldest continuously operating mints in the world. Throughout its long history, it has created many of the United Kingdom’s most recognized and highly collected coins.
British gold coins circulated across many parts of the world as the British Empire expanded. The original English Gold Sovereign was last issued in 1604. The coin received its name because it featured the reigning sovereign, or monarch, of England.
The modern Great Britain Gold Sovereign was introduced in 1817 following the Great Recoinage Act of 1816. Sovereigns were produced regularly for about a century before long pauses in production. Between 1917 and 1957, the coin was only struck in 1925. Regular production resumed in 1957, and The Royal Mint continues to issue Gold Sovereigns in both Brilliant Uncirculated and Proof finishes.
The reverse of the Gold Sovereign traditionally features St. George on horseback defeating a dragon. This famous design was created by Italian engraver Benedetto Pistrucci in 1817 and remains one of the most recognizable images in British coinage.
The obverse features a portrait of the reigning British monarch at the time the coin was issued. Earlier Sovereigns may show Queen Victoria, King Edward VII, or King George V. Later coins may feature one of several portraits of Queen Elizabeth II or more recent British monarchs.
Most Gold Sovereigns were produced by The Royal Mint, although some were also struck at branch mints in Australia, Canada, South Africa, and India.
